Toward the end of 70s there were some significant changes in the IDF rank system. The rank of Rav-Turai Rishon was discontinued, as well as the winter uniform. The only sort of uniform used in IDF becomes the well-known olive/grey (excluding the special dress uniform, wore by the senior army officers during diplomatic missions aboard and the white shirt used by the Navy as a Ceremonial dress).

Two new NCOs' ranks were introduced about that time: Rav-Samal Yekhidati Rishon (since middle 80s - Rav-Samal Mitkadem) and Rav-Samal Bakhir. Furthermore, the NCOs' insignia were moved from wrist to collar.

About middle 80s a new group of officers' ranks named Professional officers was introduced. There were 5 ranks corresponding to company grade officers: Academic professional officer, officer of medicine, officer-dentist and officer of justice for graduates of the academic reserves program who had not yet completed the official IDF officers' course, and the military rabbi. They had no special insignia, but only a shoulder band, with the name of rank written on it.
