During 2001 there were some cardinal changes in IDF insignia and uniforms. Around August 2001, the career personnel (NCOs and officers) received a new common type of uniform instead of everyday and ceremonial. The new insignia of ranks were embroidered. However, several months later, the officers received their metallic insignia back, while the embroidered pattern has remained for NCOs and winter coats only. During 2004 the insignia of Samal Rishon were replaced by embroidered ones. It should be noted, that the reservists use the uniforms of both old and new patterns.

On June 1st 2005 the former IAF commander Dan Khalutz was appointed to IDF Chief of Staff. Thus he become the first non-ground forces general ever promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
